Top 15 Female Artists

Since it was International Women’s Day March 8th, I thought it would be appropriate to write about my favourite female artists. ( No worries, I am not some crazy feminist) I think a big reason why I like many of the artists in the list that follows is because they are strong and powerful individuals... oh yeah, and their music is awesome! (Well at least I think so, you’ll just need to see for yourself)

  1. Cat Power - There’s something about her voice. As she whispers the lyrics, it’s as if she’s telling a secret, forcing you to get captured in her story as you try to listen more intently. Her style is vulnerable yet powerful at the same time. Many of her albums are absolutely amazing, but I must say that my favourite album by Cat Power is the covers record. This album is strictly a cover album with a selection of songs originally by artists such as the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones. I would definitely say that my favourite song by Cat Power is her cover of Wonderwall, (originally by Oasis of course). There is just something so pure and real about her style that goes well with the lyrics. This cover is probably one of the best covers done by any artists in my opinion.
  2. Zee Avi- This young artist has come a long way since she first started posting videos on Youtube of herself playing guitar and singing. She’s a singer, she’s a songwriter, she’s a guitarist... she’s absolutely amazing! But what is it that differentiated Zee Avi from all the other aspiring singers posting videos on the internet. Perhaps it’s her unique jazzy vocals, maybe it’s her honest lyrics or a combination of them both? She demonstrates her uniqueness in her self-titled album. I personally love every song on the album. My favourite would be Honey Bee which I love for the witty lyrics and the story that it portrays. I must add that I also love the songs Kantoi and Just You and Me because I’m a sucker for any song that has ukulele.
  3. Lisa Hannigan – Think you’ve never heard of her? You probably have if you ever listened to Damien Rice. Yes, she’s that soothing voice in many of Damine Rice’s songs on albums O and 9. This Irish singer/songwriter musical career doesn’t end at just this. She came out with her own debut album Sea Sew in 2008. Check it out if you’re in for something soothing and playful. Her cover of Get the party started is also something worth checking out.
  4. Kimya Dawson
  5. Joanna Newsom
  6. Feist
  7. M.I.A.
  8. Nico
  9. New Young Pony Club
  10. Peaches
  11. Patti Smith
  12. Lauryn Hill
  13. Bjork
  14. Emily Haine (Metric)
  15. Ani DiFranco
Check it out for yourself!
